Just as Todd McFarlane was handed the reins to create a new Spider-Man series the previous year, the Uncanny X-Men team of Jim Lee and Chris Claremont were selected to bring a new X-Men series to life. This is basically the issue that made the X-Men superstars. Sure, the X-Men had been around for almost 30 years at this point, but Jim Lee's explosive pencils and redesigned costumes created a stampede at the comic book shop. What's not to like about this issue? Magneto is back with a new villainous team called the Acolytes. And I can't think of a better, more solid X-Men team than the heroes in this issue: Wolverine, Gambit, Rogue, Cyclops, Beast, Storm, Jean Grey, Colossus, Archangel, Iceman, Psylocke, Banshee, Forge, and Professor X. And even Nick Fury makes a cameo in this issue. Wolverine battles Magneto in this issue and Rogue gets emotional when she sees Magneto for the first time since their Savage Land romance (Uncanny X-Men 269, 274, 275).
